THE SYMBOL OF OUR CHURCH:

A CUP AND A CROSS

New Hope Christian Church is part of a denomination called “The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)". It is the United States’ oldest indigenous denomination. That is to say, of all the denominations actually begun in the United States, and not carried over from Europe, the Christian Church was the first.

The symbol of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is a cup, called a “chalice” and a cross shaped like the letter “X”. The cross overlays the left side of the chalice, the chalice reminds us of the centrality of the Lord’s Supper in the worship of the church.

The X-shaped cross is connected with Andrew, one of the 12 apostles of Jesus. Tradition has it that Andrew, when martyred for his faith, asked not to be crucified on the same type of cross as his Lord for he considered that too great an honor. Thus, Andrew was crucified on an X-shaped cross. Andrew was known for his desire to share with others the good news of what God had done through Jesus Christ and for his work in serving others. Our prayer is that the X-shaped cross will remind us of the joy found in telling others about God and serving all. The official display of the chalice and cross is upright. However, New Hope Christian has elected to tilt the chalice that it will remind us to pour ourselves out into our community and world.

WHAT WE BELIEVE:

As members of the Christian Church, we confess that Jesus Christ is the Christ, the Son of the living God, and proclaim him Lord and Saviour of the world. In Christ’s name and by his grace we accept our mission of witness and service to all people. We rejoice in God, maker of heaven and earth, and in the covenant of love which binds us to God and one another. Through Baptism into Christ we enter into newness of life and are made one with the whole people of God.

In the communion of the Holy Spirit, we are joined together in discipleship and in obedience to Christ. With the whole church we receive the gift of ministry and the light of scripture. In the bonds of Christian faith we yield ourselves to God, that we may serve the One whose Kingdom has no end. Blessing, glory and honor be to God forever. Amen
