Partnering with Scouts
We are off to a great start with our Cub Scouts. This week the children, along with their parents and den leaders, planted seeds! We typically use seeds that we’ve saved but for this project we used fresh peppers and tomatoes instead. It was wonderful for the families to see and taste what they would be growing. They planted nasturtium flower seeds, but I did not have any fresh plants to share with them. These flower seeds are large and produce an edible plant with a distinctive aroma, making them a good choice for young kids to plant.
It was a first for many of these families so there were lots of questions about how many seeds to plant and how to water - but a comment that stands out was about gardening on a patio. Many folks are in condos, apartments, or do not have a yard suitable for gardening. Some plants will grow just about anywhere so why not on your patio? As long as your container is large enough to handle the root system of your plant AND you have adequate sunlight, you will be able to grow whatever you want, wherever you want.
